Professional Growth Cycles support

Does the professional growth cycle in your setting focus on inspiring teacher/kaiako growth and personal ownership rather than compliance? Do you need to move teachers from a model of ‘proving’ to ‘improving’?

A Professional Growth Cycle is intended to make the most of the authentic learning collaborations already taking place between teachers and support their professional learning to reach a deeper level through these natural collaborations.

A successful Professional Growth Cycle should:

  • prompt teachers to think about how they use and meet the Code Ngā Tikanga Matatika & Standards Ngā Paerewa in their everyday practice.

  • naturally meet the mandated requirements from the Teaching Council, including coverage of the PGC elements and meeting the Standards Nga Pāerewa annually and endorsement of practicing certificates.

  • inspire teachers/kaiako to drive their own professional growth and be responsible for skilfully critiquing their own practice.

  • be a catalyst for uniting staff in shared understanding of effective professional practice in their setting, for their ākonga, and having deeper conversations about how to improve this.

Three principles are often visible in a successful Professional Growth Cycle:

  1. clarity - creating shared understanding and transparency

  2. collaboration - valuing learning with and from others

  3. conversations - robust dialogue about teaching and its impact on learning

Many leaders are finding that they are needing support in one or more of these principles to move the learning culture in their staff from one of compliance to one focusing on growth.
