Why focus on aromatawai in your PLD plan?

Aromatawai serves as a vehicle for effective teaching, learning, and assessment across all curriculum areas. 

Professional learning grounded in pakirehua (teaching as inquiry) supports leaders of learning in applying an ongoing cycle of inquiry, aimed at improving school- or kura-wide aromatawai practices.

What might aromatawai support focus on? 

Develop your understanding of aromatawai and explore how its principles can be effectively enacted. We use Te Poukapa Āheinga mā te Kaiako me te Ākonga (Assessment for Learning Teacher and Student Capabilities Matrix) as a conceptual framework to illustrate the progressions that both ākonga and kaiako experience as they embody aromatawai principles.  

Aromatawai mō te ako focuses on supporting pouako and kaiako in partnering with learners as active participants in their learning journey. Pouako and kaiako are guided in strengthening their aromatawai capabilities. When we support schools or kura in developing aromatawai practices, there are often links to marau ā-kura and mātauranga Māori. 

Integrating robust aromatawai practices often requires reviewing assessment systems and processes, including moderation. We support your senior secondary kaiako to do this.

What your aromatawai PLD might look like

  • In-class support of kaiako to analyse and affirm your teaching practice in relation to ākonga learning. 

  • Modelling mentoring conversations for pouako that aim to support kaiako and improve their teaching practice. 

  • Workshops for all staff to deepen their understanding of aromatawai and explore ways to involve ākonga in creating meaningful learning pathways. 

  • Guidance for staff in assessing and evaluating meaningful learning pathways. 

  • Support in strengthening assessment practices, including the collation and use of aggregated assessment data for ākonga.
