Ruth works as an education consultant out of our Auckland office. She works with both English-medium and dual-medium kura in the following areas:
assessment for learning
teaching as inquiry
mentoring school leadership teams
supporting bi-lingual units to implement and review the implementation of kaupapa Māori.
During her time at Evaluation Associates | Te Huinga Kākākura Mātauranga Ruth has had the privilege of supporting teachers and leaders to use assessment for learning. This is an important kaupapa for Ruth as it is focused on accelerating the learning and achievement of all ākonga. Ruth also values the focus on teaching and leading in ways that empower the learner. This creates the conditions for ākonga to exercise agency over their own learning in partnership with their kaiako, parents and whānau.
Prior to joining Evaluation Associates | Te Huinga Kākākura Mātauranga, Ruth was a very effective classroom teacher and senior teacher in the primary and intermediate sectors. She recalls the powerful impact that assessment for learning had on improving her practice and on student achievement. This is central to her facilitation practice.
Ruth recognises the importance of great leaders in schools. She works alongside school leaders to monitor goals for improvement from the school’s annual plan to leader and teacher inquiry goals. Ruth also supports leaders and teachers to analyse classroom practice and she works collaboratively with leaders to use this analysis to inquire into ways they can meet the identified needs of learners.
Ruth enjoys working with leaders to strengthen partnerships between the kura and ākonga, whānau and local iwi. This also includes supporting kura to work with their communities to unpack what achieving success as Māori looks like.
In her spare time Ruth enjoys paper-crafting and exploring new destinations, both at home here in NZ and abroad, and learning more about the history of each place and the people who have left their mark.
These are some of the schools Ruth has worked with recently:
Clendon Park School
Kawerau Putauaki School
