Janelle Stevenson
Janelle is based in Invercargill. She works with schools in the following areas:
teaching and leading as inquiry
practice analysis conversations
using evidence to accelerate learning
culturally responsive and relational pedagogy
using assessment for learning to improve student outcomes, particularly in NCEA
secondary English and literacy across the curriculum
strengthening learning focused relationships
appraisal for improvement
developing adaptive expertise and evaluative capability.
Janelle started full time with Evaluation Associates | Te Huinga Kākākura Mātauranga at the beginning of 2017. Until the end of 2016 she worked part time as a facilitator in Leadership and Assessment in Otago and Southland schools, and part time as the Head of Faculty English in a large secondary school, as well as teaching English and classical studies. She therefore has current knowledge and experience of leadership and influencing change, and enjoys seeing all learners, including teachers, being more empowered and truly engaged when learning is culturally responsive and ako is nurtured. Her passion is in strengthening the capabilities of middle leaders to confidently work in a student centred manner. In teaching and facilitation Janelle has high expectations for all akonga.
Her other facilitation experience has been through secondment to work in the areas of secondary English and literacy across the curriculum. Janelle has extensive knowledge of managing national assessment, having held a number of national assessment contracts.
Over the last few years Janelle has enjoyed being part of the Education Council’s appraisal workshops for teachers and leaders and she fosters appraisal for improvement as part of a future focused inquiry process.
Janelle’s work centres on empowering all learners through collaboration, and she believes we are all learners who can be empowered by reflection, strong relationships, responsiveness and creativity.
When not at work she loves travelling – to the other side of the world when possible, walking her wild spaniel on the wild Southern beaches, reading, foreign films and dabbling with poetry.
