NCEA Te Reo Māori workshop

Navigate NCEA levels 1-3 changes with confidence and prepare ākonga for success.

Why this workshop?

The recent introduction of new NCEA Level 1 changes has left many Te reo Māori teachers uncertain about the new requirements, especially in relation to exams. This workshop tackles those challenges head-on, equipping kaiako with the knowledge and tools to enhance their teaching practice and better prepare ākonga for success.

In addition to addressing curriculum changes, the workshop fosters a supportive community, providing opportunities for kaiako to connect, share resources, and collaborate on moderation practices—areas that can often feel isolating and challenging to navigate within individual schools.

What you'll learn

  • Unpack NCEA standards: Gain clarity on the Te Reo Māori Level 1-3 standards, specifications, and marking criteria for internal and external assessments.

  • Exam preparation strategies: Discover innovative learning strategies tailored to the diverse needs of global learners.

  • Effective teaching practices: Explore teaching methods aligned with the Tū Rangatira framework, promoting quality practice.

  • Collaborative moderation: Learn how to build and participate in moderation groups to share resources and feedback.

  • Readiness: Leave with a comprehensive set of standards and an assessment overview, fully prepared for the school year.

  • Professional growth cycles (PGC): Use the Niho Taniwha framework to guide professional learning groups (PLG) and measure progress.

Who is this for?

  • Te reo Māori kaiako teaching in both urban and rurual high schools.

  • Kaiako at all levels of confidence in te reo Māori, from beginners to fluent speakers.

This workshop is specifically designed for high school educators and is not intended for primary or early childhood educators.

Course structure

Two full-day, face-to-face workshops:

  • Day one: NCEA Level 1

  • Day two: NCEA Levels 2-3

Participants have the flexibility to attend one or both days, depending on their needs.

Optional Group Coaching:
For those who would like to continue support, small group coaching (4-6 participants) is available for personalised guidance and collaboration. This is offered as an additional option outside the core workshop structure and pricing.

Why now

 This workshop addresses:

  • Sector demand: Many kaiako are facing challenges in navigating the new NCEA changes and report feeling isolated in their roles.

  • Lack of support: With similar workshops no longer being offered, there is a significant gap in available resources and guidance.

  • Honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi: This workshop empowers kaiako by recognising their vital role as Treaty partners within schools, promoting an inclusive, culturally responsive approach.

Learning Pathways

After completing this workshop, you will be able to:

  • develop effective unit plans for the academic year

  • confidently support ākonga success in te reo Māori assessments

  • build lasting partnerships and collaborative networks with fellow kaiako

  • integrate culturally responsive teaching practices into your classroom.
