Equity and excellence for ākonga Māori

Are you ready to take action and drive meaningful change for equity and excellence in education? This kaupapa is designed for agents of change and teams committed to improving teaching and learning for ākonga Māori. Grounded in the Niho Taniwha framework, this wānanga will guide participants through critical reflection, strategic action, and collaborative professional learning to uplift the outcomes for ākonga Māori.


What to expect

This programme blends kanohi-ki-te-kanohi (face-to-face) wānanga with online Professional Learning Groups (PLGs), providing:

  • Deeper insight into personal values and belief systems that influence practice.

  • Frameworks to guide professional inquiry, self-review, and strategic planning.

  • Practical strategies to improve teaching, learning, and assessment practices for ākonga Māori.

Delivery includes:

  1. Pre-wānanga preparation
    Readings and videos to build shared knowledge prior to workshops.

  2. Wānanga 1
    Deep dive into the journey so far, shared kupu (terminology), and unpacking biases in assessment and learning processes.

  3. PLG 1 (online)
    Discuss Action Research Inquiry, preload for the next workshop, and engage with the Niho Taniwha framework.

  4. Pre-wānanga preparation

  5. Wānanga 2
    Evidence-based discussions to enhance kaiako and kaiarataki practices, with feedback on participants' findings.

  6. PLG 2 (online)
    Share Action Research outcomes, ākonga voice, and collaborate on sustainability strategies using the Niho Taniwha framework.
